Scientific name: Panthera uncia
Origin: Asia
Size: 0.9-1.2m
Diet: Carnivore
IUCN status: Vulnerable
Threats: Loss of prey (wild sheep and goats) as a result of poaching and depredation on livestock, hunting for the fur trade
Zoos I have seen them: Dublin Zoo, Welsh Mountain Zoo, Ménagerie du Jardin des Plantes, Highland Wildlife Park
Interesting fact: Originally, the snow leopard was classified as a member of the Panthera genus. In recent times, it has usually been placed in its own genus, Uncia. Following a DNA study, it is once again considered part of Panthera.
