Scientific name: Ailurus fulgens
Origin: Asia
Size: 50-64cm long (excluding tail)
Diet: Omnivore, but mostly herbivore
IUCN status: Endangered
Threats: Deforestation, hunting for its fur
Zoos I have seen them: Dublin Zoo, Belfast Zoo, Fota Wildlife Park, Highland Wildlife Park, Ménagerie du Jardin des Plantes, Chester Zoo, Welsh Mountain Zoo, Natura Artis Magistra, Diergaarde Blijdorp, Edinburgh Zoo
Interesting fact: Genetic analysis indicates that the red panda is the sole living representative of the family Ailuridae, rather than a member of the bear or raccoon families. Several extinct species belonging to this family are known, with fossils found in North America and Spain.
