International name: Eurasian otter
Scientific name: Lutra lutra
Irish name: Dobharchú
Length: 95-130cm
Diet: Carnivore
Tips on how to find them: Present only in oxygen-rich waters; usually nocturnal (I was lucky to have seen one by day, as in the photograph); look out for spraints (droppings) on grassy mounds or rocks; footprints large and webbed; burrows called holts in river banks.
