Scientific name: Mandrillus sphinx
Size: 55-110cm
Diet: Omnivore
Origin: Africa
IUCN status: Vulnerable
Threats: Deforestation, poaching for bushmeat
Zoos I have seen them: La Vallee des Singes, Tierpark Hellabrunn, Chester Zoo, Natura Artis Magistra
Interesting fact: The largest of the monkeys, the mandrill and its cousin, the drill (Mandrillus leucophaeus), both have a similar body shape to baboons, and were once included in the same genus, Papio. They are in fact closer relatives of the mangabeys (Cercocebus).
