Axolotl cartoon by David TwamleyScientific name: Ambystoma mexicanum

Size: 10-30cm

Origin: North America (Mexico)

Diet: Carnivore

IUCN status: Critically Endangered

Threats: Pollution of its habitat, capture for the pet trade

Zoos I have seen them: National Reptile Zoo, Ménagerie du Jardin des Plantes. Also saw one at Trinity college open day 2016

Interesting fact: White axolotls are rare in the species’ wild state, but all leucistic individuals (white with black eyes) are descended from a mutant male who was brought to Paris in the 19th century.
