Red squirrel cartoon by David TwamleyInternational name: Eurasian red squirrel

Scientific name: Sciurus vulgaris

Irish name: Iora rua

Diet: Omnivore, but largely herbivore

Size: 20-25cm

Tips on how to find them: Look up at the trees, as red squirrels spend most of their time in the trees, while the greys feed more on the ground; also look out for their nests, called dreys, which are large, round, and built of sticks and foliage; can be seen throughout the country, but best to look in areas where grey squirrels are absent.
